Abstract
One may as well begin with two overly-cited quotations about novelty. Thefirst: “On or about December, 1910, human character changed.” And, morepredictably: “Make It New!” That these two statements about change and innovation have been so frequentlycited reveals a contradiction in modernist studies: novelty is commonplace, both for modernist writers and for literary critics.
